Case Study: Making Home

Technical Lead + Website Design and Development

What

A new home-lifestyle publishing site for renovations, redesigns, restyles, guides, reviews, and home inspiration, built on top of the YOMM-based WordPress Multisite system with a full logged-in frontend user section for competitions, comments, profiles, reviews, and community features.

Why

To launch a separate editorial and product-review property, including its video renovation series, with strong performance and maintainability, while reusing shared infrastructure and code from the related WOM and YOMM platform work where it made sense for a new site.

Who

WOM Network

A product-led tech company behind shopper advocacy communities including YOMM, ReviewByYOU, Making Home and MoMs. I worked in a startup-style environment, owning architecture, platform delivery and product engineering across a lean team.

How

Development

Led the new project, built as a child theme on the shared WordPress Multisite platform — reusing the established plugin stack and theme foundations, to the same WP VIP coding standards — so launch effort went into the site itself rather than rebuilding infrastructure.

Although it shared its foundations with YOMM, the templates and styling were completely reworked — giving Making HOME a very different look and feel, suited to its home-lifestyle editorial, guide and review content.

Hosting

Ran the site on a scalable, serverless WordPress Multisite stack on AWS, with Cloudflare in front, keeping hosting lightweight while fitting into the broader WOM push for lower downtime, faster response times, and scalable delivery.

Integrations

As the platform's next site, Making HOME extended the shared functionality another step — part of a deliberate strategy where each new site built out more of the capability needed to eventually replace the company's ageing legacy site.

The homepage pulled in Instagram posts without a bulky frontend plugin, using a Cloudflare Workers proxy so production, staging and local sites all shared one cached, rate-limited API response. A custom WordPress plugin then rendered that feed in Making HOME's existing markup patterns.
