What
A drop-in Sass theme for Bootstrap 3, built to help teams use Australian Government interface patterns without rebuilding from scratch.
Why
To make government sites more consistent and accessible, while letting Bootstrap-based teams keep their existing front-end foundations.
Who
Department of Finance
Working in Australian Government Information Management Office within the central Australian Government agency, which was responsible for whole-of-government ICT, digital services and web standards. I worked with a small web-focused team, from apprentice to Whole of Government Software as a Service tech lead.
How
Design
Mapped the draft government UI style onto Bootstrap components, including colours, states, spacing and accessible markup.
Worked with Digital Transformation Office designers to trial a web-specific government crest as a small-screen alternative to the full Coat of Arms, taking cues from similar identity work by GOV.UK.
Collaborated with the Digital Transformation Office and other agency design teams on the new government-wide UI style being developed at the time. That cross-agency design work later formed the basis of the Australian Government Design System.
Development
Packaged the UI style as a Bootstrap-compatible Sass theme with supporting SVG assets and small JavaScript additions only where they were needed.
It was adopted by government teams working on similar front-end foundations, and our team tested it in practice during a GovCMS-based rebuild of directory.gov.au.
